Root Canal Treatment

root canal treatment

A root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure performed to save a severely damaged or infected tooth.

It involves removing the infected or inflamed pulp from the inside of the tooth, cleaning and disinfecting the root canals, and then filling and sealing them to prevent further infection.

The need for a root canal treatment arises when the pulp, which contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue, becomes infected or damaged due to deep decay, a cracked tooth, or trauma. If left untreated, the infection can spread to the surrounding tissues, leading to abscesses, bone loss, and severe pain.

During a root canal procedure, the dentist will first administer local anesthesia to ensure the patient’s comfort. Then, they will create a small access hole in the tooth to reach the pulp chamber and root canals. Using specialized instruments, they will carefully remove the infected pulp and shape the canals to prepare them for filling. Once the canals are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, a biocompatible material called gutta-percha is used to fill the canals. This material seals the canals, preventing bacteria from re-entering and causing reinfection. In some cases, a temporary filling may be placed to protect the tooth until a permanent restoration can be placed.

After the root canal treatment, the tooth may be sensitive for a few days, but this discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications.  Your dentist will discuss the options for restoring the tooth’s functionality and appearance. This may involve placing a crown or a filling to strengthen and protect the tooth.

Root canal treatments have a high success rate and can save a tooth from extraction, preserving its natural function and appearance. By addressing the underlying infection or damage, a root canal can provide long-term relief from pain and restore oral health. It is always recommended to consult a dental professional to determine if a root canal treatment is necessary for your specific dental condition.
